Chapter Eleven

It’s a Love Thing and Somethin’

This was very trying for the both of us. Yes, it was true that I placed myself in this situation, and I was truly crazy for still being here but…I love him. As I sat there, I thought to myself, Am I exchanging Love for Stupidity? I keep coming back to that question.

“Come on, babe, let’s go.”

As we left the courthouse, I felt someone looking at me. I looked back and saw Ursula. She smiled, so I smiled back at her with a wink. I am a smart-ass sometimes. I grabbed his strong arm and realized I really won!

A week later, we received a phone call from his attorney. Eric put him on speaker.

“Hello, Eric…Vanessa. How are you doing today?”

“We are fine. How are you?” After we got the pleasantry out the way, we were anxious about what he was going to tell us.

“What’s up?” said Eric.

“We are waiting for the judge to sign off on the divorce today,” he exclaimed. “She sounded like she was tired of this crap too. She said ‘How do you bring a divorce case to court and you are the hold up?’”

Eric was smiling from ear to ear when he heard the news.

He continued, “I will call you as soon as it happens.”

“Okay…Hey, thanks for everything,” said Eric.

“No worries…This was a rough one, but at least you can move on. Talk with you guys later.” He hung up.

“Babe, as soon as we get the word, would you marry me?”

I always knew I would marry him if he asked. “Of course, I will.”

He picked me up and kissed me. He walked to his closet and pulled out a Tiffany Blue box—you know, “That Box.” Eric opened the box as he got down on his knee.

“Vanessa, will you please, please marry me?” It was a 2 1/2 karat solitaire set in platinum.

“Yes!” I said. “Of course!”

We hugged and kissed. The kiss was a kiss of relief for both of us.

We didn’t hear anything from the attorney for about a week. Eric called the office and found out that his attorney was admitted to the hospital for emergency surgery. The office thought he was informed. Mr. Priceton was fine—gall stones. They apologized and said that they would find out the status of his case.

As soon as he got off the phone to tell me what happened, the phone rang again. It was Ursula. He placed her on speaker without her knowing.

“Hello.”

“Eric?”

“Yes?”

“It’s Ursula.”

“I know.”

“Well, I just wanted you to know…that it is over. We are divorced.” We both did quiet jumps for joy.

Ursula’s voice had a quiver every time she spoke a word. “All I ask is that when you marry Vanessa…that you don’t do it on our wedding day.”

I looked at Eric like, She is truly full of herself. Eric said, “First of all, Ursula, why would I do that? She is special and she will have her own day to remember.”—he winked at me—“Second, it is none of your business what day we get married.
